In direct contrast to what was happening outside the courthouse, where media outlets were rushing to report the court?s decision regarding Obama?s health insurance mandate, the crowd inside the courthouse waited on tenterhooks, completely silent as Chief Justice John Roberts read the court?s decision.

Roberts did not make the winning side immediately clear when reading, so for an intense moment, both sides thought they had won.? Solicitor General Donald Verilli Jr., who has been largely criticized for his argument representing the government?s case, sat quietly and showed no emotion as the verdict was read.? After the chief justice finished explaining the courts had decided to uphold the requirement for individual insurance, everyone seemed to exhale at once.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was expected to be the swing vote upon which the eventual verdict would rest, ended up on the losing side and was visibly angry while reading his dissent, calling the majority vote a ?vast judicial overreaching?.

During the case, a broccoli analogy had been used by Justice Antonin Scalia, expressing that if people can be forced by the government to buy insurance, it can force them to buy anything; for example, broccoli.? This got laughs when it was referred to by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but she eventually made clear that she understood the argument being made, but disagreed with the implications because health care is not like vegetables; it is something that everyone will eventually need, some sooner and some later but it is impossible to tell when or how serious the need will be.

NBA Draft 2012: Cavs Continue to Rebuild with Additions of Waiters and Zeller

Head coach Byron Scott commented in April that he did not expect the Cleveland Cavaliers to make the playoffs in 2013. This odd remark was not a degradation of the team, but a look into the collective conscience of the entire organization.

Patience is the key for fans during this era of rebuilding, and that patience was tested on draft night when the Cavs shocked the NBA for the second year in a row by reaching on the No.4 pick in the draft and selecting Syracuse guard Dion Waiters.?

An hour later, the Cavs traded away the rights to the No.24, No.33 and No.34 picks to the Dallas Mavericks for North Carolina center Tyler Zeller and NBA veteran small forward Kelenna Azubuike.

The evening was an emotional roller coaster for fans who initially booed the Waiters pick?at the Cavs' draft party in Quicken Loans Arena. Jeers turned to cheers when the trade for Zeller was announced, but the overall tone of the evening was confusion.

Just a week removed from watching the Miami Heat win their first NBA Championship, Cavs fans are struggling with the desire to win immediately or build for the future.

Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller are not as glamorous as the thought of Bradley Beal or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist running the floors at The Q, but the truth is that both Waiters and Zeller are already the best players at their respective Cavalier positions.

An influx of young talent, however, will not be able to hide the gaping hole at small forward and lack of depth. Omri Casspi was a disappointment in 2011-12, and fan favorite Alonzo Gee would be an able sixth man at best on most NBA teams.

The key moment will come next year during the 2013 draft. This will be the third draft in a row with at least two first-round picks; and if Sacramento can avoid being a lottery-bound team next season, the Cavs could acquire a third.

Having already drafted four of the five positions in Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller during the rebuild, the Cavs have the luxury of going all-in on the best small forward in the draft.

It is still doubtful that the Cavs will be aggressive in free agency until the young core team has had an opportunity to play a full season together. As long as GM Chris Grant can keep their spending at a minimum, the team will be in a position to grab some players in the 2014 free-agent class (that topic is for another article).

Holiday boaters: Remember the manatees : Outdoors & Recreation ...

Save the Manatee Club is asking the Florida boating community to participate in manatee safety this busy Fourth of July holiday and beyond.

The club offers a variety of free public awareness materials to protect the endangered marine mammals.

Waterproof banners are free to Florida boaters. These bright, bold yellow banners act as cautionary signs and alert other boaters when manatees are present in the area with the easy-to-see directive, ?Please Slow, Manatees Below.?

Free yellow dock signs for shoreline property owners in Florida, boating decals, and new waterproof waterway cards containing safe boating information also are available from the Club. All provide the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission?s (FWC) hotline number (1-888-404-3922) for reporting manatee injuries, deaths, or harassment.

Cathie and Randy Bieber enjoy cruising from Palm Beach to Miami for weekend getaways aboard their 44-foot boat. They recently contacted the Club for a yellow boating banner.

?This banner will be a great asset, and we?ll display it frequently,? said Cathie. ?We always keep a sharp eye out when cruising on the Intracoastal for our friends, the manatees. We are very excited to have this opportunity to help these peaceful, gentle giants.?

Save the Manatee Club also offers free, family-friendly public awareness manatee signs and posters for sites where human/manatee interactions are a problem. These materials have been distributed around Florida to state, municipal, and county parks, marinas, and other places where harassment of manatees is a concern.

According to Katie Tripp, director of science and conservation for Save the Manatee Club, the public awareness signage combined with responsible boating and ?manatee manners? can save manatee lives.

?Manatees rely on knowledgeable, thoughtful boaters and waterway users for their protection from injury, harassment, or death,? Tripp said in a press release. ?Our organization can?t fully protect manatees or their aquatic habitat without the support of the boating community. Manatee-safe boating is paramount during busy holidays when more boats are out and the risks to manatees are increased.?

Looking for a good deal? On the go? With minimal effort? Groupon, the groundbreaking online couponer, released a revamped app this month that makes finding and using good deals pretty effortless. Groupon 2.0 for Android's new interface is clean, bright, and Ice Cream Sandwich-y with lots of layers and scrolling, but it doesn't scroll smoothly. From what I've read in other comments and forums, my Samsung Galaxy Nexus is not alone.

What's Groupon?
For the uninitiated, Groupon is one of the most popular destinations for coupons on a wide range of products, ranging from restaurants to massages. There are two types of deals: 'Daily' and 'Now!' 'Daily' deals are offered for a few days and expire within several months, and are only activated when enough people purchase the deal (typically the next morning). 'Now!' deals can be used immediately, but they can only be redeemed within a set time frame. However, if you don't get a chance to use the deal, Groupon will refund you. ?

This year Groupon added a Rewards loyalty program that lets you collect points to redeem exclusive Groupons, by using your credit card at participating Groupon Rewards stores. Participating stores will have a green Groupon sticker at the cashier. Interesting idea, but I have yet to see this sticker anywhere in New York City.

Despite its disappointing IPO, Groupon is still one of the biggest players in the market and reportedly commands 90 percent of the daily deals space, along with Amazon's Living Social site. Google Offers (beta) is also making strides in this crowded category, and recently launched its first Android app as well. However for now, the mature Groupon 2.0 for Android offers more features and better organization, so if you had to go with just one daily deals app I'd recommend Groupon's.

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) -Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi and defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Ignazio Abate are undergoing treatment for injuries and are hoping to return for Thursday's European Championship semifinal with Germany.

"All three are making progress and we will do everything possible, right down to the last minute, to make them available," team doctor Enrico Castellacci said Tuesday.

De Rossi has a problem with his sciatic nerve that is affecting his left foot, and left Sunday's penalty shootout win over England in the 80th minute.

Italy's football federation said later Tuesday that De Rossi would appear at a news conference the following day, a move that usually indicates a player will be used in the next game.

Abate has a muscle problem in his left leg and Chiellini has a left hamstring problem.

Abate's replacement Christian Maggio picked up a yellow card that rules him out of Thursday's match in Warsaw.

Italy required extra time and the shootout to beat England in the quarterfinals on Sunday and has two days' fewer rest than Germany entering the semifinals.

"There is a general state of fatigue in the squad," Castellacci said. "That's to be expected after the stress and emotion of the last few matches. We're doing everything possible to recuperate our energy."

Human-powered helicopter breaks record with 50-second flight

A team at the University of Maryland has blown away a long-standing (or long-hovering) record for human-powered flight. A Japanese team stayed aloft for 19 seconds in 1994, and no one has been able to do better until Thursday, when the Maryland team stayed aloft for 50 seconds. They fell just?short, however, of the 60 seconds required to qualify for a decades-old $250,000?prize.

Gamera II is the name of the helicopter the team constructed in order to claim the Sikorsky prize, created in 1980 in memory of the helicopter?pioneer Igor Sikorsky.?The contest requires that the craft reach 3 meters of altitude ? and that it stays there for a full minute.?

The newest version of the craft weighs only 71 pounds, 30 less than the previous one, which?stayed aloft for 11 seconds in 2011. Gamera II?harvests power from arm movements as well as pedals, transmitting more power to the four large rotors. These and other improvements allowed the team to break the 18-year-old record and post a time of 50 seconds in the air at 2 feet up. Watch the video of that flight below:

The team will continue to make attempts at the 60-second goal, though they would still need to go significantly higher to claim the prize money, even if they hit the minute mark. The solution is not as easy as simply pedaling harder. Gamera II takes advantage of an aerodynamic characteristic of low-altitude craft called ground effect, which reduces the energy needed to hover, and that advantage decreases the higher the craft goes.

The researchers from Maryland are not the only ones working on the problem: A private team called Atlas recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise some funding for their attempt on the Sikorsky prize. The requirements of the prize may be straightforward, but they are also extremely difficult, so chances are it will take some time and effort, not to mention money and materials, to make it happen.

World presses EU summit for lasting euro remedy

Europe's leaders gather for a mother-of-all-summits this week under intense global pressure to head off a potentially catastrophic economic collapse.

Months ago already, European Union president Herman Van Rompuy said in off-the-cuff remarks that the eurozone stood "back to the wall", "at the edge of a cliff", "with a knife at its throat".

That was before the relentless two-year sovereign debt crisis wrecking much of Europe hit the unthinkable -- infecting Spain, the eurozone's fourth-largest economy, and threatening Italy, its third-largest, after earlier rescues of Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

"An unwinding of the eurozone... would be the defining crisis of the entire century. It would be catastrophe," Yves Tiberghien, of the University of British Columbia, said after this week's G20 talks in Mexico.

"They created this great experiment," he said of the 10-year-old single currency shared by 17 vastly disparate nations.

"It was very daring but we know now it's incomplete, it's very dangerous, it doesn't work, it's not functional to do monetary union without banking union and fiscal union and therefore higher political integration."

At the summit -- to be held Thursday and Friday in Brussels -- the slight and canny Van Rompuy, a former Belgian premier, will attempt to take the eurozone up that road.

"I will propose building blocks for deepening our economic and monetary union so that we can show to the rest of the world and to the markets that the euro and the eurozone is an irreversible project," he told G20 leaders.

The EU's first moves would be to kickstart growth and integrate Europe's banking sector, he said.

At talks between the eurozone's Big Four in Rome last Friday, leaders of Germany, France, Italy and Spain agreed to inject up to 130 billion euros ($163 billion) -- one percent of European gross domestic product -- into giant infrastructure projects able to provide jobs at a time when one in four young people are unemployed in some nations.

The lesson of the crisis, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, was "more Europe, not less Europe".

"We need to work closer together politically, especially in the eurozone. Whoever has a common currency must also have coherent policies. That is also a lesson from the last two years," she said.

Powerhouse Germany favours common policies on taxation and budgets -- which would require treaty change -- but is reluctant to share debt, unlike its traditional core EU partner France, which favours creating eurobonds.

At the Brussels summit, the first of Van Rompuy's "building blocks" is expected to be a proposal for a banking union, should he clinch a tough-to-reach compromise over the role of the European Central Bank.

"Banking union is a fundamental element," he told German paper Welt am Sonntag, in an interview published Sunday.

"I think we can move forward there more quickly than in other areas."

Banking union would be a first step in a long-term -- perhaps decade-long -- roadmap to political union to be outlined to EU leaders by Van Rompuy, with dates and institutional problems such as treaty change set out by year's end.

EU diplomats said Van Rompuy had been asked to ready a detailed proposal for October, or possibly December.

But a move towards Europe-wide guarantees on deposits and a central authority to close bad banks would both boost confidence and ease the flow of cash.

"Out of the chaos are emerging ideas," said a senior EU diplomat. "It will be a political union at the end of the day."

In a reminder that this week's get-together will be of special importance, US President Barack Obama said last week: "I am confident that over the next several weeks, Europe will paint a picture of where we need to go."

Adding to the pressure, International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde said Friday that "a determined and forceful move towards a complete European monetary union should be reaffirmed in order to restore faith in the system."

In the meantime, the IMF is leaning on a reluctant Merkel to allow the eurozone's rescue fund, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), to lend directly to Spain's distressed banks, rather than to the government.

This is in order to break a so-called "feedback loop", where sovereigns face mounting borrowing costs when forced to help their own banks, leading to a vicious circle of mounting debt weighing on all institutions.

Spain will formally request a eurozone loan for its banks on Monday.

And the "men in black" inspectors from the IMF, ECB and European Commission return to Athens on Monday to check the state of play on reforms pledged in exchange for a 130-billion-euro loan.

The new coalition government formed last week, backed by conservative, socialist and moderate leftist parties, wants the austerity-heavy terms of Greece's bailout tweaked to kickstart growth.

Rabbis Advocate for Israel and Address Today?s Jewish Community

On the lawn of the new 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan, dozens of rabbis stood facing east, davening together on a June afternoon. The group included rabbis young and old, women and men, from all denominations and types of congregations from across North America. In a place where spirituality pervades, the rabbis added their own prayers, offering a Mourner?s Kaddish for those that perished there more than 10 years ago.

Rabbi Neil Sandler of Atlanta led the Mincha service next to the miraculous "Survivor Tree," one of the site?s original pear trees that continues to sprout life. ?As a rabbi who officiated at the memorial services of two 9/11 victims, it was both an honor and an uplifting experience,? he said.

The visit was part of The Jewish Federations of North America?s Annual Rabbinic Cabinet meeting in New York City, which brought together 60 rabbis for three days of informative presentations, thought-provoking discussions, and intimate meetings with political, religious and community leaders.

?The annual meeting really touched upon and combined the full spectrum of what it means to be a rabbi in North America in the 21st century,? said Rabbi Stuart Weinblatt of Washington, D.C., chair of JFNA?s Rabbinic Cabinet.

The meeting began with visits to the United Nations, where the rabbis split into groups and met with ambassadors and representatives of a dozen countries, including the Vatican?s mission to the UN. Ambassador Richard Schifter, who served in the UN and as ambassador to the Human Rights Commission, provided strategic guidance on which missions the rabbis might best influence.

At meetings with leaders from Canada, Estonia, Poland and others, the rabbis urged action on topics including the unjust treatment of Israel at the UN, the delegitimization of Israel, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the threat of a nuclear Iran.

?An astonishingly high number of nations ? 12 ? agreed to meet with us,? said Weinblatt. ?We were extremely well received, and they were happy to hear from us. Time will tell what impact our meetings will have.?

During their visit to the 9/11 Memorial, the rabbis spoke to Michael Arad, the Israeli-American architect who designed the site, and Salvatore Cassano, commissioner of the NYC Fire Department. The group also toured the 9/11 Tribute Center with its president and co-founder, Lee Ielpi, and heard about response to tragedy from Rev. Chloe Breyer, executive director of the Interfaith Center of New York; Rabbi Simkha Weintraub of the National Center for Jewish Healing; and Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, executive director of the New York Board of Rabbis.

Over the three days, rabbis studied with Yehuda Kurtzer, president of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, and conversed with Jewish leaders including Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations; Ambassador Ron Prosor, Israel?s permanent representative to the UN; and Jerry Silverman, president and CEO of JFNA.

?We need your wisdom at Federation tables across North America,? said Silverman during his presentation. ?As rabbis, you remind us that we are rooted in the powerful gift of Torah. As leaders, you guide us and ensure we weave its teaching into our work.?

To round out the agenda, the group attended dinner at the Edmond J. Safra Synagogue, and enjoyed a private showing of the movie ?Follow Me,? with one of its producers.

Rabbi Efrat Zarren-Zohar of Miami pointed to many highlights throughout the meeting, but said the greatest takeaway was the opportunity to communicate and learn from the collective of rabbis. ?I have always been impressed by the quality of the speakers and the issues that are addressed at Rabbinic Cabinet meetings,? she said, ?but it?s also a great opportunity to network with colleagues from?around the country.?
